Tragic End of Innocence: 10-Year-Old California Boy Killed by Peer After Bike Race

A quiet California neighborhood was rocked by an unimaginable tragedy over the weekend when a 10-year-old boy, Keith “KJ” Frierson, was fatally shot by another child of the same age following a bicycle race. The heartbroken mother of the victim, Brittani Frierson, shared the dreadful details of the incident that unfolded in Foothill Farms, a community situated about 16 miles northeast of Sacramento.

According to Frierson, the dispute began after an informal bike race late Saturday afternoon that ended in frustrations for the young shooter, who was being a "sore loser." The children had been enjoying a quintessentially suburban activity, riding their bikes in their neighborhood, when the situation took a devastating turn. KJ, who had been joyously riding the bike he received for Christmas, was the unfortunate target of the juvenile shooter’s anger.

Recounting the events that led to her son’s death, Frierson said she had learned of the altercation through a neighbor's child who had been part of the group riding bikes. The suspect reportedly walked off angrily after losing the race and returned with a firearm, shooting KJ in the neck without uttering a word. The silent streets were soon filled with the commotion and cries for help that led Frierson to the horrific scene.

The suspect, whose identity remains protected due to his age, has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder. The gun in question is believed to have been taken from the child's father, Arkete Davis, who has since been arrested on multiple charges, including possession of a firearm by a felon, criminal storage of a firearm, carrying a stolen loaded firearm in a vehicle, child endangerment, and acting as an accessory to a crime after the fact.

It has been reported by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office that the child accessed the stolen and improperly stored gun in his father's car when sent to retrieve cigarettes. The Sheriff's Office is under the belief that after the tragic event took place, Davis attempted to dispose of the weapon in a trash can.

Brittani Frierson mourned her son, remembering him as a generous, smart, and friendly boy who was well-known for helping elders in the neighborhood with their groceries. His sudden and violent death has robbed the community of a young soul described by many as a good kid, full of potential.

KJ was also part of the Sacramento Youth Football team, the Jr. Football Mustangs, where he found a community and support after his father passed away, reaching a championship game with enthusiasm and determination.

Emotions ran high as Frierson not only grappled with the loss of her young son but also with the knowledge that the accused was a child who often played with her children and was seen as a friend by her son. She condemned the suspect’s father for his negligence with the firearm that led to this tragedy.
