The Gauteng Traffic Police Department has issued an urgent plea to motorists to remain vigilant and drive safely as traffic volumes in the province are expected to reach their peak during the festive season. With the anticipated influx of holidaymakers returning to Gauteng or heading out to various leisure destinations for New Year's Eve celebrations, the department is calling for increased caution on the roads.

Since the start of the festive season, the province has already experienced a distressing number of fatalities, with 242 lives lost in road accidents. These statistics underscore the importance of safe driving practices, particularly as the roads become busier with travelers.

Holidaymakers are being reminded to plan their journeys well, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, and adhere to speed limits to help prevent further tragedies on the road. Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane emphasized the department's commitment to ensuring safety on the province's roads.
