Deadly Floods Devastate KwaZulu-Natal, Prompting Calls for Vigilance and Safety

Three people, including two children, have perished in the severe floods unleashed by torrential rain in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province. The destructive weather has also led to the disappearance of a man believed to be swept away by the powerful currents of the Msunduzi River in Pietermaritzburg. The rainstorms, which significantly impacted the iLembe and uMgungundlovu districts, have prompted the province's department of co-operative governance and traditional affairs (Cogta) to issue an urgent call for caution and careful monitoring of weather conditions.

The crisis unfolded when a family's car was tragically washed down the swollen Msunduzi River near Henley Dam after flooding compromised the integrity of a bridge. A joint effort by local community members and the SA National Defence Force enabled the extraction of the vehicle from the water. A woman and a young child were found deceased in the aftermath, and their bodies were surrendered to the police. The search for an adult male continues, with response teams diligently scouring the area.

The province has also mourned the loss of a seven-year-old boy who drowned in Mandeni amidst fierce rainfall that only lasted approximately 15 minutes but left substantial damage in its wake. Numerous households have experienced significant property damage, and the full impact on road infrastructure is still being evaluated by disaster assessment teams.

Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, the Cogta MEC, has implored for a detailed examination of the devastation and stressed the importance of prompt reporting of missing individuals in the wake of the rains. She lamented the grim start to the year and called for reinforced collaboration between the government and local communities to ensure appropriate precautionary measures are in place. Emphasizing the role of community leaders in disseminating safety information, Sithole-Moloi reiterated the necessity of adhering to safety warnings to mitigate the dangers presented by such aggressive weather phenomena.

Amid the recovery and response efforts, the province braces for more rainfall forecasted for New Year's Day, keeping the disaster response teams on maximum alert.
