Tragedy Strikes on Christmas Day: Young Boy Drowns, Man Missing in KZN River

In an unfortunate incident that occurred on Christmas Day, an eight-year-old boy was swept away and drowned in the Masende River in Mandeni, KwaZulu-Natal, while a 37-year-old man who was with him is still missing. This somber news was confirmed by the KZN department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs (Cogta), which has been tirelessly working on search and rescue operations in the region.

The body of the boy was recovered by disaster management teams on Monday evening. The ongoing search for the missing man had to be temporarily put on hold due to persistent rainfall in the area, with plans to resume on the following Wednesday morning.

The incident has had a notable impact on the local region, increasing the death toll from floods and rain-related accidents to seven people. Additionally, there are still 11 individuals unaccounted for, which includes those affected by the severe flooding in Ladysmith. This highlights the extensive challenges faced by search and rescue teams who are relentless in their efforts to find those missing amidst the hazardous conditions.

To oversee and strengthen the disaster response initiatives, Provincial Cogta MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi chaired a meeting of a joint operation cluster that included representatives from all municipalities. The aim of the meeting was to enhance coordination across various levels of government and to devise an impactful strategy to provide assistance to those affected by the floods and ongoing rainfall.

The KZN Cogta has issued a warning to the public regarding the safety measures that need to be observed during this period of increased rainfall. The department has emphasized the importance of exercising caution, particularly for travelers on the road and residents residing near water bodies. There's a strong advisory against attempting to cross rivers that have risen above knee level.

The South African Weather Service has predicted an above-normal level of rainfall through the summer season, which intensifies the need for diligence and adherence to disaster warnings to mitigate risks associated with flooding. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the ramifications of extreme weather conditions and the importance of being prepared and disaster-wise.
