Western Cape Intensifies Road Safety Efforts with Daily Roadblocks During Holiday Season

The Western Cape, a region known for its scenic beauty and tourist attractions, is witnessing an influx of holidaymakers this season, especially along the popular Garden Route. In a bid to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors alike, traffic authorities in the Western Cape are stepping up their game with daily roadblocks aimed at keeping a stringent check on motorists pouring in from various parts of the country.

Amid the increased road activity, this initiative also sees the collaborative efforts of provincial traffic officials and the South African Police Service (SAPS) setting up integrated operations along crucial traffic points. A notable presence was seen at the Tsitsikamma toll plaza on the national N2 highway where the Provincial Minister of Mobility Ricardo Mackenzie and Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Nomafrench Mbombo made their presence known by welcoming motorists.

The objective of these efforts is very clear – to reduce the alarming rate of road crashes and resultant fatalities that tend to spike during holiday periods. Minister Mackenzie expressed concern over the grave statistics that prompted the action, emphasizing the deployment of nearly 600 traffic officers across the province. Their mission is not only to enforce the law but also to foster a culture of responsible driving among the populace.

Mackenzie implored drivers to adhere to basic safety practices such as obeying speed limits, refraining from driving under the influence of alcohol, fastening seatbelts, and ensuring that their vehicles are in roadworthy conditions before travel. The overarching message to the public was one of personal responsibility, with the emphasis placed on the role of each individual in guaranteeing a safe return home to celebrate the holidays with loved ones.

The province's officials are articulate in their stance that while they are committed to maintaining road safety through these roadblocks and other measures, the real change lies in the hands of each motorist.
