With the ever-increasing thirst for high-speed internet access, South Africa is witnessing a surge in data consumption among its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) subscribers. As of November 2023, one of the country's most intensive data consumers has hit a record-breaking usage of 121 terabytes (TB), an amount of data so colossal that it equates to downloading a 150GB game like Red Dead Redemption 2 a staggering 807 times.
This unprecedented demand for data is reflective of a broader trend across the nation as both fibre networks and mobile operators continuously ramp up their capabilities. The expansion of fibre networks, along with the enhancement of minimum line speeds, means South Africans are now capable of accessing much higher bandwidths compared to the constrained offerings of mobile networks. This often results in mobile carriers implementing strict fair usage policies to combat potential network congestion due to high levels of consumption.
Fibre's capacity to deliver faster and more reliable speeds—surpassing that of wireless technologies, including the newly deployed fibre-like 5G connections—remains unparalleled. This technological edge is chiefly due to the physical nature of fibre infrastructure, which isn't limited by the radio frequency spectrum constraints that mobile networks encounter.
Tracking the consumption patterns has become an interest for industry watchers such as MyBroadband, which consistently engages with leading fibre internet service providers (ISPs) to reveal data on the heaviest users. While the identities of these high-usage customers are not disclosed, ISPs offer glimpses into the staggering figures, typically shared in package type, fibre network operator (FNO), and the volume of data devoured by their top three consumers.
In the latest figures provided, Afrihost dominated, with its top user on a Vumatel 1,000/250Mbps connection consuming a record-high of 121TB. Outputs are also impressive among Afrihost's second and third highest data users, with 115TB and 99TB consumed respectively, one on the same Vumatel package and the other on a Frogfoot 1,000/1000Mbps subscription. Moreover, it is insightful to observe the top 10 FTTH consumers from Afrihost who are predominantly using similar high-speed offerings.
Not to be left out, Cool Ideas, another ISP giant, witnessed its top three users—all on 1Gbps packages—reach significant usage levels with the highest at 61TB consumed on a Zoom Fibre 1,000/500Mbps package. This was closely followed by 57TB on an Octotel connection.
Level-7, while featuring lower speed packages in comparison, still saw a commendable consumption level with its top user burning through 31TB on an Openserve 300/150Mbps connection.
The refusal of consumer data demand to wane showcases a thriving digital economy and a palpable hunger for data-heavy applications and services in South Africa. It's a compelling indication of the need for continued investment in digital infrastructure to cater to the growing necessities of a connected society.
