Canal Walk Shoppers on High Alert After Spate of Bathroom Robberies

Cape Town's premier shopping destination, Canal Walk, has seen a recent surge in brazen thefts targeting unsuspecting shoppers. The Milnerton Community Policing Forum (CPF) has issued a strong warning to the public via Facebook after a reported seven victims fell prey to thieves in bathroom ambushes.

According to the CPF, a disturbing tactic has emerged, involving a suspect staging a fall to distract the victim before committing the theft. In one particularly alarming account, a young man was separated from his friends, believing he was aiding someone in distress, only to be robbed by the feigning individual and his associates.

The CPF initially learned of the incidents through a public warning about a cellphone theft on a Friday evening. This report, however, could not be fully corroborated but prompted awareness of pickpocketing occurrences within the mall. The weekend brought more attention to the situation as a WhatsApp message describing a similar incident involving a young man post-work hours went viral.

Though the shopping center's marketing manager, Vanessa Herbst, has denied knowledge of these events, tension and vigilance among the mall-goers have heightened. This series of misfortunes only adds to the unease caused by an audacious heist that occurred just over a week prior at the same location.

On December 6, a coordinated group broke into the gomaxx. store, an Apple products retailer, executing a swift theft of valuable IT equipment, which included roughly 16 Apple MacBooks. The heist was over in mere minutes, leaving the mall and its patrons stunned and disconcerted. Despite the police continuing their investigation, no arrests have been made in connection to the crime.

In response to this worrying trend, the Milnerton SAPS have pledged to increase their presence at Canal Walk during the festive season, seeking to deter further criminal activities and reassure the public of their safety. The community is encouraged to maintain heightened awareness and to secure their personal belongings while frequenting the bustling shopping hub.

Residents and visitors alike are advised to remain alert, especially in vulnerable areas like restrooms and crowded spaces. With the holidays fast approaching, the heightened foot traffic presents an opportune time for thieves, making vigilance all the more critical.
