As the 2021 December holidays approach, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is taking proactive measures to safeguard schools during this vulnerable period. Education MEC David Maynier announced the department's plan to ramp up security in a bid to prevent instances of vandalism and burglary, which schools in the province have previously faced.
With schools set to close for learners, the WCED has identified 486 schools in hot spot areas that will receive subsidized security services throughout the holiday season. This move is part of a comprehensive strategy to protect educational infrastructure and it highlights the importance the government places on maintaining a safe and secure learning environment even during periods when schools are unoccupied.
Maynier emphasized the integral role communities play in ensuring the safety of these institutions. He has appealed to locals to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity around schools to the police. The spirit of community involvement is deemed crucial in complementing the efforts being made at an official level. The SAPS, together with the community, can act as a formidable deterrent to potential vandals and thieves.
This initiative comes after the WCED faced significant challenges during the previous holiday period, with 38 incidents of burglary and vandalism reported. These occurrences affected the metro education districts the hardest, culminating in substantial losses of valuable resources such as computers, stationery, and safety equipment. Despite similar security measures having been taken during the June and July holidays, the breaches during that period have prompted an even more robust approach this time around.
Highlighting the progress made over the past year, Maynier expressed gratitude towards those involved in various educational initiatives, including the #BackOnTrack and Rapid School Build programs. The success of these initiatives is attributed to the dedication of staff members throughout the educational system.
In the face of these concerns, resources have been put in place to facilitate the reporting of incidents. The Safe Schools hotline, which operates toll-free, and Crime Stop are available for anonymous tip-offs, ensuring that community members can take action without fear of reprisal.
Going forward, the goal is not only to minimize the loss and damage to school property but also to foster a sense of responsibility and care within communities regarding their local schools. This holiday security plan by the WCED stands as a testament to the joint effort required to maintain a positive and uninterrupted educational trajectory for learners across the Western Cape.
