Union Triumphs in Recognition Battle at Rainbow Chicken Plant

In a significant win for labor rights, the Agriculture, Food and Allied Democratic Workers Union (AFADWU) has successfully secured recognition at Rainbow Chicken's Hammarsdale processing facility in KwaZulu-Natal. The announcement follows a tense period of industrial action initiated by nearly 500 workers on December 6, 2023, a move that underlines the power of collective bargaining and union solidarity.

The conflict began earlier this year when Rainbow Chicken, a subsidiary of RCL Foods, terminated AFADWU's organizational rights at the plant, claiming the union failed to reach a 30% national representation threshold. However, AFADWU has been the dominant union at the Hammarsdale plant, a discrepancy that led to escalating tensions.

In May, the dispute was brought before the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), where the union obtained a certificate authorizing strike action. Nevertheless, Rainbow Chicken sought to halt the strike with a Labour Court interdiction, which was ultimately dismissed, allowing members of AFADWU to cease work in early December.

The company confirmed that the strike was defused and that normal operations would resume immediately. Despite the unrest, Rainbow Chicken assured that production volumes remained unaffected during the strike period.
