Tragedy Strikes at Milnerton Lagoon Beach: Rip Current Claims One Life, Leaves Another in Critical Condition

In an unfortunate incident at Milnerton Lagoon Beach in Cape Town, a leisurely day turned into a tragedy when a group of friends found themselves trapped in deadly rip currents. The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Melkbosstrand duty crew and the City’s water rescue network swiftly received eyewitness reports of a drowning in progress on Monday, 11 December, at 1:42 pm.

The rescue operation saw a coordinated effort from a multitude of services, including the Milnerton Surf Lifesaving Club (SLC) lifeguards, NSRI Melkbosstrand rescue swimmers, City law enforcement and marine units, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, South African Police Services (SAPS), Western Cape Government Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Community Medics, ER24, and Netcare 911 ambulance services.

Local residents, alerted by desperate cries for help, discovered two men in their prime years struggling amidst the notorious rip currents of Milnerton. In a heroic act, a local male resident, leveraging an NSRI pink rescue buoy strategically placed along the beach, managed to bring both men ashore. Upon reaching the beach, their conditions were dire. The 25-year-old man collapsed, showing no signs of breathing with an absent pulse, while his 30-year-old companion was in a severe state.

Immediate medical intervention by the lifeguards from Milnerton SLC was followed by continual efforts at resuscitation. CPR was administered by well-trained hands before a handover to the paramedics, who tirelessly performed advanced life support maneuvers on the younger victim and stabilized the other.

Despite the extended and fervent rescue efforts, the 25-year-old man sadly succumbed to the ocean's grip, with the resuscitation attempts ultimately proving futile—his life declared extinct at the scene. The 30-year-old man was quickly transported to a nearby hospital by an ER24 ambulance, his condition deemed critical.

The rip currents claimed the life of a young man and left his friend fighting for his life, marking a grave day for the beachgoers and the first responder community. It is believed that the friends, originating from Zimbabwe, had been enjoying their morning at Milnerton Lagoon Beach when the tragic events unfolded. The decease has since been taken under the watch of government forensic pathology services and an inquest docket opened by SAPS.

This event has led to a renewed appeal from the NSRI, lifeguards, and combined emergency services, urging the public always to choose beaches with lifeguard protection for swimming. Rip currents are a persistent danger along the coast, and knowledge about them—including how to identify and escape these strong water channels—is crucial for safety.

The community is now mourning the irretrievable loss of a young life and hoping for the recovery of the surviving victim, as this incident serves as a somber reminder of the ocean's unpredictable nature.
