Gauteng Education Department Achieves Over 99% Placement for Grades 1 and 8 Pupils

Johannesburg - In an impressive display of efficiency and technological adoption, the Gauteng Education Department has announced the successful placement of more than 99% of pupils who applied for Grade 1 and 8 for the 2024 academic year. The achievement marks a significant milestone for the province, which has been pushing for a streamlined and more accessible admissions process through its online system.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane, while giving an update on Sunday, highlighted the substantial progress made in admissions. Out of the over 305,981 applications received, 273,186 pupils with complete applications have now been placed in schools across Gauteng—a stark contrast to the placement backlog witnessed in previous years.

This year's online admissions process saw a small percentage of applicants—just over 32,000—yet to be allocated to a school. Chiloane pointed to incomplete applications and invalid documents as primary causes for this lag, emphasizing the need for parents to submit all required documentation to expedite the placement process.

The remaining applicants, representing a mere 0.2% of the total, are expected to be placed by 17 January 2024. Chiloane expressed optimism about meeting this deadline and painted a picture of an educational system on the brink of unprecedented administrative success.

The commitment to resolving the placement backlog goes hand in hand with the department's pledge to ensure that every child has access to education, in line with South Africa's constitutional guarantees. The department has urged parents who have not yet submitted the necessary documentation to do so promptly to avoid any further delays.
