The Electoral Commission of South Africa is doubling down on its efforts to ensure a comprehensive electoral roll ahead of the pivotal 2024 national and provincial elections. With a continued push to increase voter participation and the accuracy of the voter registry, a second voter registration weekend has been formally announced, slated for February 3-4, 2024.

This decisive move comes as a reinforcement to the initial registration drive that took place on November 18-19, which resulted in 568,374 first-time registrants and pushed the total number on the electoral roll to 26.8 million. In lieu of the forthcoming elections, the Commission has reiterated the importance of a thorough and inclusive registration process, ensuring that all eligible South Africans are given ample opportunity to partake in the democratic process.

In a bid to accommodate all South Africans, including those living abroad, the IEC is not only making provisions domestically but also extending its reach to South African high commissions, embassies, and consulates globally. From January 26-28, these international locations will facilitate the registration of voters, a move that further democratizes the process beyond the nation's borders. In an unprecedented step, South Africans overseas have been given the ability to register online as well, making use of a recently launched self-registration portal. By simply visiting the portal, citizens can input their details and upload a requisite scanned image of their identity document.

The scope of inclusivity stretches even within national borders as the Electoral Commission is set to conduct voter registration within prisons. From January 30 to February 1, inmates will be afforded the constitutional right to register and participate in the upcoming elections, ensuring that basic democratic rights are observed without prejudice.

To support these initiatives, the Electoral Commission’s contact centre is primed to tackle any queries from the public. Operational from 8am to 5pm on weekdays, the centre can be dialed toll-free at 0800 11 8000. The facilitation of the voter registration process is further complemented by the perpetual accessibility of the online voter registration portal, which will remain active until the official proclamation date of the 2024 elections.

For those already on the voter roll, the IEC has made it possible to scrutinize and update registration details through its online platform. Moreover, registered voters can confirm the address of their designated voting station; a simple SMS containing their ID number sent to 32810 will relay this information.

These structured efforts by the IEC exemplify its commitment to ensuring a transparent, free, and fair election, with the highest standards of voter registration and data integrity. By broadening the outreach and streamlining the process, the institution aims to bolster democratic engagement and ensure the representation of the diverse South African populace in the governance process.

South Africans are encouraged to take cognizance of the importance of their vote and to rally behind this initiative by registering, verifying their information, and preparing to make their voice heard in the upcoming critical electoral juncture.
