The Western Cape High Court of South Africa has sentenced a dangerous criminal to a significant prison term, highlighting the state’s commitment to bringing justice to the victims of violent crimes. Seabatha Clement Kholoane, 41, a Lesotho national, was handed a 37-year direct imprisonment sentence following a series of heinous acts that culminated in murder and multiple burglaries within the elite Pinnacle Point Golf Estate in Mossel Bay, where he previously held employment.

Kholoane’s criminal undertakings began to unfold shortly after his legal right to be in South Africa had lapsed. Utilizing a security card obtained through his employment at a property management company within the estate, he commenced his unlawful endeavors on May 21, 2022. On that day, he made away with a laptop, alcohol, clothing, and a vehicle that he would later abandon after the stolen goods were sold off in Kwanonqaba, a community in Mossel Bay.

His capture seemed imminent when he was arrested only days after his first burglary, yet the case momentarily stumbled when struck off the roll due to unresolved issues. Undeterred, Kholoane escalated his criminal activities to a mortifying climax. On June 3, 2022, he once again illicitly entered the estate and confronted Marietha Sophia Willemse, 79, whose act of self-defense with a kitchen knife ended with Kholoane fatally stabbing her and injuring her husband Johannes Steyl Willemse, 86, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.

As Kholoane’s spree continued, authorities were able to connect the dots that would spell the end for the perpetrator. His fingerprints and DNA, a forensic pairing as unique as a signature, left a trail leading to his involvement in an additional series of burglaries. The criminal, however, evaded immediate capture by fleeing to Lesotho but was eventually apprehended in December 2022 at Wepener, Free State.

The court sentenced Kholoane to a combined 54 years for all eight charges; however, some sentences will run concurrently, effectively leading to 37 years of actual imprisonment. This sentencing follows advocate Lenro Badenhorst's persuasive assertion that the severe impact on the family of the victims, especially the husband who lost his wife and was then moved to a special care facility, warranted a harsh punishment.

Kholoane’s sentencing by the Western Cape High Court sends a robust message regarding the consequences of crime in South Africa, particularly against vulnerable communities and individuals. It also reflects the diligent work of investigators who pieced together the evidence required to secure such a conviction.
