The recent bouts of stage 6 load-shedding in South Africa have unveiled a new layer to the electricity crisis, affecting homes and businesses nationwide. A senior executive at Eskom, the country's primary electricity supplier, has highlighted the excessive use of air conditioners and fans during the heatwave as a contributing factor to the power system's tripping point. Karabo Rakgolela, general manager of Lethabo Power Station, reflected on how affluent South Africans' reliance on cooling systems resulted in a dramatic surge in electricity demand.

In addition to the surge in consumption, the heat had direct physical impacts on Eskom's infrastructure. High temperatures are known to exacerbate existing vulnerabilities within power stations, such as tube leaks and unit tripping. The unprecedented heatwave left Eskom in a precarious position, witnessing failures in power units that surpassed expectations, and ultimately requiring the utility to run on diesel reserves late into the night.


The spotlight also turned on the storied issue of the reserve system's inadequacy. As stage 6 load-shedding returned, Electricity minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa stated that Eskom's emergency reserves had been over-utilized. This heavy reliance meant that the reserves could not be engaged extensively without risking damage to the grid. The usual 4,600MW drawn from these reserves was indefensible under the circumstances, leaving the country in darkness more frequently.


The operational metrics only underscore the gravity of the problem. Independent energy analyst Pieter Jordaan outlined how Eskom's usage of Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGT), designed to supplement the national grid during peak periods, far exceeded the limits set by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa). Overuse of OCGT's, which was recorded at 40% for Week 46 and spiked to 63% on Sunday, not only highlights the gravity of the reliance on emergency power but also inflates costs significantly. This over-reliance contributes to the ever-mounting costs of energy production in South Africa.


The ensuing load-shedding cripples everyday life and casts a long shadow over the country's economic prospects. The hiatus in power supply affects various sectors, from small businesses struggling to operate without a consistent power supply, to students unable to study in the evenings. Furthermore, prolonged load-shedding threatens the integrity of electrical appliances and stirs public unrest due to the inconvenience and unpredictability of outages.
