Johannesburg, South Africa - Black Friday and Cyber Monday have historically served as pivotal moments for the retail industry, but it is the food and beverage sector that has emerged as one of the top performers in South Africa's online shopping extravaganza this year. According to Peach Payments, a major digital payment gateway in South Africa, these sectors experienced significant growth in both transaction count and rand value over the weekend, reflecting resilience and consumer confidence in the nation's burgeoning e-commerce landscape.
Peach Payments released data showcasing the food and beverage industry's growth, which exceeded 57% in both rand value and number of transactions when compared to 2022 figures. The retail industry wasn't far behind, demonstrating a 52% growth in transaction count and a 41% rise in rand value. These impressive numbers underscore a consumer behavior shift towards managing household expenses amid increasing food inflation and climbing interest rates.
The travel and accommodation sector also shone brightly with an outstanding 341% growth in rand value compared to the previous year. This increase could signify the sector's revival post-pandemic, offering a glimmer of hope for an industry that has been among the hardest hit by global travel restrictions. Glenda Steyn, head of Enterprise Sales at Peach Payments, emphasizes the significance of this growth, which even excluding new merchants on the platform, clocked in at an impressive 29%.
Peach Payments processed over 1.1 million transactions during the four-day period, with a total value surpassing R872 million. These figures, as highlighted by Steyn, reflect South Africa's robust and supportive online payment infrastructure despite prevailing economic challenges. The success of the weekend sales event is viewed as a harbinger for potential merchant scaling in 2024, especially in the post-election economic climate.
In addition to providing valuable sales data, Peach Payments fosters merchant promotion via the #PeachFriday campaign. Their Black Friday Dashboard, accessible at peachpayments.com/black-friday, displays real-time transaction volumes and serves as a promotional hub for businesses leveraging the sales event. By integrating a social media display box automated from Instagram posts hashtagged with #PeachFriday, merchants, regardless of existing partnerships with the payment platform, have capitalized on the added visibility.
Peach Payments remains committed to empowering merchants with a suite of supportive measures including an e-commerce hotline, thematic webinars aimed at optimizing online businesses, and dedicated support teams. Joshua Shimkin, head of SME Growth and Marketing at the company, reflects on these initiatives as part of their pledge to aid merchants in business growth and online sales optimization, further cementing their role as a cornerstone of South Africa's e-commerce development.
