In a stride to bolster innovation within South Africa, the Craft and Design Institute's (CDI) Design Innovation Seed Fund (DISF) is calling upon the nation's creative minds needing financial support for their pre-revenue ideas. Operated by CDI Capital, this fund is particularly aimed towards designers, inventors, entrepreneurs and product developers, providing a significant boost of up to R800,000 in grant funding.

Originally launched in 2014, the DISF has been a crucial force in driving the development of innovation across diverse sectors. With significant financial backing from the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), and with the support of the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT), the fund has been instrumental in spasming off R17.8 million over its tenure. This investment has fostered the creation of 35 remarkable innovations to date, leading to accolades, local and worldwide investments amounting to R377 million, and besting all projected objectives thus far.

The diversity of the innovation landscape in South Africa has been reflected in the previous recipients of the DISF funding. From biotechnology and health to advanced manufacturing, information and communication technology, including emergent fields like machine learning and artificial intelligence – inventors from all domains have turned to the DISF for that initial capital to get their path-breaking ideas off the ground.

CDI has witnessed palpable successes through the DISF, as evidenced by the stories at Cape Aerospace Technologies, GoMetro, Impulse Biomedical, LIQID Medical, Legal Connection, and SwiftVEE. These enterprises not only stand as testaments to the usefulness of the fund but also illustrate the potential for scale and wider economic impact that can be realized through such fiscal assistance.

Grants from the DISF are designed to assist entrepreneurs in the critical stages of innovation – from conceptualizing and designing prototypes, conducting significant solution testing, to validation of market and technical assumptions. For many budding innovators facing the daunting challenge of securing funding from conventional financial institutions, the DISF represents a lifeline – a means of translating their innovative potential into tangible, market-ready commodities.

Erica Elk, the Group CEO at CDI, emphasizes the fund's core mission: the empowerment of innovators. According to Elk, such support is the catalyst that transmutes creative concepts into commercial success, providing a foundation for innovators that may otherwise stall without access to capital.

The DISF's ultimate goal aligns with fostering a robust innovation ecosystem, augmenting the growth of businesses in pre-revenue stages and enabling them to attract subsequent investment rounds. This is echoed in the success stories shared by both emerging ventures and eventually mature start-ups that have benefited from the DISF, embarking on journeys that include award-wining accomplishments, significant employee headcounts, and enviable global client bases.

As the current phase signals the final call for applications in the existing round of funding, potential applicants are urged to submit their proposals by 5pm on Friday, 15 December 2023. Prospective recipients are advised to diligently review the application guidelines to ensure the completeness and competitiveness of their submissions. Further details and application procedures can be obtained by visiting the CDI's official application portal.
