After a series of delays and a long anticipation, Tesla has finally started delivering its groundbreaking Cybertruck, with the first 10 units being picked up at the company's Texas Gigafactory. The distinctive electric pickup was presented four years ago, and in that time, Tesla and CEO Elon Musk have confronted and overcome prodigious production challenges.
The initial batch of Cybertrucks marks the beginning of a new chapter for Tesla, with prospective buyers and electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts keen to explore the vehicle's offerings. Tesla's configurator reveals significant details of the models available:
The entry-level Rear-Wheel Drive model, priced at approximately $60,990, is slated for release in 2025. It promises a 250-mile range and a 6.5-second acceleration from 0-60 mph, with a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds.
A step up, the All-Wheel Drive dual-motor variant, comes with a price tag of $79,990, expecting to hit the market in 2024. Impressive features include a 350-mile range, 600 horsepower, and a 4.1-second 0-60 mph sprint capability, complemented by its 11,000 pounds towing capacity.
The top-of-the-line Cyberbeast, expected in 2024 and costing an estimated $99,990, boasts 845 horsepower, a lightning-fast 0-60 mph in 2.6 seconds, a top speed of 130 mph, and 320 miles range while maintaining the 11,000-pound towing capacity.
The Cybertruck impresses with its robust construction, featuring a Tesla-designed steel alloy with exceptional durability; it even proved to be bullet-resistant in demonstrations. With its seemingly indestructible glass and superior cabin sound isolation, it brings an element of luxury to the rugged pickup segment.
Tesla has equipped the AWD and Cyberbeast models with an 18.5-inch touchscreen display and a secondary 9.4-inch display for rear passengers. The vehicles are supported by Tesla's acclaimed Supercharger network, and during fast charging, the AWD model can gain 136 miles in 15 minutes, with the Cyberbeast adding 128 miles in the same period. Notably, a "range extender" accessory can further increase the range of the AWD to over 470 miles and the Cyberbeast to 440 miles.
The Cybertruck's design and capabilities, from its utility features such as a 4x6-foot bed and four-corner adaptive suspension to its high-tech amenities like a power-opening frunk and steer-by-wire system, separate it from any current competition. Additionally, color wraps will be available to personalize the vehicles.
Despite the euphoria surrounding the first deliveries, the uncertainty prevalent during the Cybertruck's development continues to cast a shadow. Questions remain regarding long-term build quality, customer satisfaction, and Tesla's ability to address early operational challenges and improve the product over time.
