South Africa Battles Record-Breaking Heatwave Amid El Niño Conditions

South Africa is currently in the grips of an extraordinary heatwave, one for the history books, with daily life disrupted as temperatures continue to defy expectations. The South African Weather Service (Saws), the authority on climate and atmospheric conditions in the nation, has verified that multiple temperature records have been shattered across the country during this unprecedented event.

For a significant time, from November 19, 2023, the country has been under the influence of a high-pressure system causing hot to extremely hot weather conditions. Records have been set in various provinces, and the peak of this heat spike was recorded on Monday, November 27, when large areas, particularly in the Northern Cape, experienced the full brunt with temperatures rising to 46.7°C.

This staggering temperature, as recorded at the Automatic Weather Station at Augrabies Falls, surpassed the previous November record of 46.2°C, set in 2019. Yet, despite the intense heat experienced this November, the all-time high for Augrabies Falls remains unchallenged at 48.6°C from January 2016.

The cause of these extreme temperatures can be attributed to several factors. Notably, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently in an El Niño state, a phenomenon known to bring warmer and drier conditions to Southern Africa. Predictions from Saws suggest the presence of El Niño is likely to last through the bulk of the summer months.

While El Niño typically brings drier and warmer weather from October to March, current forecasts show considerable uncertainty for the expected conditions over eastern parts of South Africa. Amidst the sweltering heat, Saws has issued prolonged advisories and cautions that weather extremes, such as this unprecedented heatwave, may become increasingly common.

The sustained high temperatures have tangible effects -- from heightened water usage and the consequent strain on water supplies to the risk of heat-related illnesses among the population. In an attempt to cope with the heat, people flock to beaches and shaded areas, although caution is urged in the face of continued, and possibly escalating, temperatures.
