Monday, 27th November 2023, signaled a new era for tourism and economic growth in the Eastern Cape with the commencement of the demolition of parts of the iconic Bayworld complex. This pivotal move initiated the transformation of the Nelson Mandela Bay’s landmark into a state-of-the-art tourism, leisure, and edutainment destination.

Headed by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), this expansive project will reinvent a grand total of 55 hectares of prime beachfront land. CEO Anele Qaba highlighted the project's pioneering aspiration to foster a 'green' development strategy, aiming to conserve and showcase the region’s unique biodiversity and cultural wealth. Creating green spaces, promoting eco-friendly and adventure activities, and enhancing the locale's security and diversity are central to this vision, emphasizing the inclusive enjoyment of both locals and tourists.

Central to this future precinct is the re-imagining of Bayworld itself. The reinvigoration strategy includes the addition of a digital dome, a hologram circus, an interactive aquarium, and a recreational water park to the existing museum. MBDA's partnership with Bayworld, the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Municipality, and the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture epitomizes the collaborative approach deemed vital for the venture's success. Qaba considers this synergistic alliance among state institutions as the cornerstone to realizing a project capable of dramatically enhancing the city’s economic landscape.

The ceremony of the demolition start was graced by NMB Executive Mayor Gary van Niekerk, who recognized the significance of Bayworld as an educational asset that fosters child development and environmental consciousness. With its track record of hosting approximately 100,000 school children annually, the revamped Bayworld is anticipated to be a beacon of knowledge and an unrivaled metropolitan attraction.

The progress into a trailblazing ocean city, as articulated by MBDA Board member Pinky Kondlo, is now closer to becoming a reality. The initial phase of the project focuses on the demolition of structures that have been condemned, allowing entry for the necessary heavy equipment to start extensive work by January the following year.

The current residents of Bayworld, including penguins and seals, are being thoughtfully attended to. Dr. Dylan Bailey, an aquarium expert at Bayworld, affirmed that their temporary relocation will ensure safety and adherence to international standards.

The environmental and cultural safeguards are in place, with approvals from relevant authorities like the provincial Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), the Eastern Cape Provincial Heritage Resources Authority (ECPHRA), and the NMB Municipality.

Post-demolition, the site will transform into an interactive outdoor space for visitors, with the animals slated to be returned for public viewing. The MBDA's commitment doesn't falter, as it continues its quest to design, operate, and fund the new aquarium concurrently with the demolition.

The broader green development spans beyond Bayworld, looking to integrate Happy Valley and an International Convention Centre, along with commercial and residential growth strategies.

Understanding the significance of public engagement, the MBDA is conducting an online session inviting feedback on the development of an adventure park and nature reserve in Happy Valley. This inclusive approach ensures community perspectives are woven into the developmental tapestry of the bay.

Moving forward, the Eastern Cape prepares itself for a transformative journey with collective anticipation, ready to embrace the novel possibilities the Bayworld Sanctuary and Park promises to deliver.
