The Abiye region, an oil-rich territory contested by Sudan and South Sudan, witnessed a tragically high death toll on Sunday following a spate of violent attacks. According to local officials, 32 individuals, including women and children, lost their lives, with more than 20 people sustaining injuries.

The local Minister of Information for Abiye and South Sudanese spokesperson, Bulis Koch Aguar Ajith, issued a distressing report detailing the calamitous event. Eyewitness accounts describe militia groups and soldiers donning South Sudanese military uniforms as the perpetrators of these heinous assaults.

What has intensified the sorrow of these events is the reported casualty of an international peacekeeper. A soldier from the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abye (UNIFSA) was fatally wounded, and another suffered injuries amid the skirmishes.

The government of South Sudan called for an immediate and thorough investigation into these ruthless acts against civilians. This surge in violence is a significant concern, casting a shadow over the already challenged stability in the region.

Abiye remains a point of contention and strife ever since South Sudan declared independence from Sudan in 2011. With numerous factions within Sudan vying for control and power, the UN has cautioned against the potential spillover of conflict into the neighboring territories—particularly Abiye. The UN's special envoy for the Horn of Africa, Hanna Tetteh, has voiced her anxiety over the fighting drawing near the border and the chilling effect it has had on discussions concerning the administration of Abiye.

Adding to the complexity, Sudan itself is embroiled in severe internal strife. A power struggle between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane and General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo erupted in mid-April, resulting in catastrophic damage and death tolls. The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (Acled), an NGO, has estimated that more than 10,000 individuals have perished as a consequence, a figure that is suspected to fall short of the actual numbers.

In response to the escalating tension and to bolster efforts for peace, the UN Security Council has unanimously voted to prolong the mission of the 4,000-strong peacekeeping force in Abiye. This extension marks twelve years of international efforts to stabilize the region and protect its residents from the horrors of armed conflict.

The international community continues to watch with bated breath as the situation in Abiye exposes the harrowing consequences of political discord and territorial disputes. The people of Abiye, perpetually caught between borderlines and battle lines, are calling for peace and security in a land they have long called home.
