The tragic event unfolded on the stretch of road that connects Lady Grey to Maletswai, known as Aliwal North. According to Unathi Binqose, the Transport Department's spokesperson, the accident scenes were harrowing, with emergency services and law enforcement working tirelessly through the chaos.

A Mazda sedan carrying six individuals—a minor boy, two females, and three males—met with a grim fate when it collided head-on with a Toyota bakkie, which had a man and a woman inside it. The impact was so severe that all six passengers of the sedan perished at the scene. In the aftermath, the female passenger in the bakkie also succumbed to her injuries, adding to the day's grim toll. The male driver of the bakkie, who sustained severe injuries, was immediately transported to a local hospital in Maletswai.
