In an inspiring demonstration of bravery and ingenuity, a group of fearless UK farmers has successfully rescued Britain’s so-called 'loneliest sheep' Fiona, who has been stranded on an isolated beach in the Scottish Highlands for nearly two years. The intrepid rescuers embarked on this daring mission when the desperate plight of the sheep came to their attention. Local animal rescue centres had previously dismissed the mission as being too hazardous to undertake.
According to The Independent, Fiona was initially spotted by kayakers exploring the Scottish highlands two years earlier. During a more recent trip, kayakers once again encountered the lonely ewe still stranded on the same beach. Consumed by concern, the group decided it was time to intervene.
The rescue operation was meticulously executed by the determined farmers, with a team of five taking on the brave mission against tremendous odds. Using heavy-duty equipment, two of the brave farmers remained at the top of the steep cliff to operate a winch, lowering three of their comrades a daunting 250m down to where Fiona was discovered in a cave.
The rescuers updated the public about the successful operation through a Facebook post. To their disbelief, Fiona was in remarkably good health, despite her extended ordeal. In a follow-up update, they reported Fiona was relieved of her heavy fleece.
The Scottish SPCA expressed its gratitude to the rescue team but was quick to sound a warning. It emphasised that such a rescue attempt should only be undertaken by those with necessary expertise, in order to prevent endangering themselves or the animal. The valiant rescuers summarised their efforts, humorously stating, "Sometimes you just need a group of idiots to get a job done."
