USA-Africa Trade Relations Take Spotlight at AGOA Forum in Johannesburg

As of Thursday, South Africa is hosting the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Forum at the Johannesburg Expo Centre at Nasrec. As one of the 35 countries benefiting from this trade program, South Africa is paving the way for advanced and strengthened economic partnerships between the United States and eligible African nations.

The theme of this forum, “Partnering to Build a Resilient, Sustainable and Inclusive AGOA to support Economic Development, Industrialisation and Quality Job Creation". is reflecting the overarching goal of the AGOA, a program passed by the US Congress in 2000.

The Forum brings together government representatives from AGOA-eligible countries and the US, alongside relevant regional economic organizations, representatives from the private sector, civil society, and, for the first time, trade unions. Over 80 workers' representatives have registered for the forum to discuss significant trade and investment issues that affect their members.

The central focus of this year's Forum is to fortify and enhance the trade and investment relations between the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa. Particular emphasis is placed on fostering resilient, sustainable, and inclusive economic growth and development across the land.

The kick-off of the forum was marked by a meeting between African Trade Ministers, South African Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel, and African Union Commissioner, Ambassador Albert Muchanga. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to officially open the forum and deliver the keynote address after a joint tour of the "Made in Africa Exhibition" with Patel, US Trade Ambassador Katherine Tai, and the US Ambassador to South Africa, Reuben Bridgety.

With AGOA's scheduled expiry in 2025, this forum provides a platform to deliberate the challenges faced by African nations, showcase beneficiary success stories, and discuss avenues to improve AGOA utilisation. An extension of AGOA beyond 2025 is expected to bring mutual benefits to both the US and African nations, further bolstering the benefits brought by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), covering 54 countries and 1.4 billion people.
