Julius Malema, the president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has questioned the inconsistencies in load shedding schedules. During an interview with Faith Mangope, the EFF leader caused a stir by questioning the reliability of current power operations, critiquing a period of uninterrupted power supply during the Rugby World Cup final but widespread power outages as matric exams commenced.

During the Metro FM interview, Malema highlighted a slew of issues including, socialism, psychological colonisation, land, state capture, local government operations, voter apathy, and the current load shedding crisis. Asked what his plans would be if he became president, Malema vowed to address these issues head-on: providing the South African public with comprehensive land ownership, free education, and embarking on comprehensive economic industrialisation. The EFF leader particularly promised to address the issue of load shedding swiftly.

Malema criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa for his handling of the issue, accusing him of empowering independent power producers (IPPs) on the back of load shedding. The recent power cuts were alleged by Malema to be an intentional move to switch off during matric exam sessions.

Despite Malema's criticisms, President Ramaphosa recently reported a measurable decline in the severity of load shedding, with regulatory reforms ushering in a surge of private investment in electricity generation. However, Malema maintains his stance, insisting that basic facilities like electricity are tampered with to satisfy the interests of a corrupt government.
