A day of jubilation and apprehension was sparked in the South African aviation industry on Thursday. Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan declared that the comeback of the South African Airways (SAA) has caused disquiet among its rivals. The statement was made at a celebratory event, marking the relaunch of SAA’s operations with their maiden intercontinental flight since April 2021, following a business rescue.

Coming out of its financial turbulence, SAA took its first leap towards normalcy in April this year after the lengthy and arduous business rescue process proved successful. And the news is that the airline doesn't plan on stopping at this.

Minister Gordhan revealed that the state intends to expand SAA’s travel map, mainly focussing on widening its wings into South America. This ambitious approach seems to be the source of disquiet for its competitors. This move marks the beginning of a challenging journey for SAA; climbing the ladder to regain its lost status and panning out strategies for an aggressive expansion, let alone surviving the cutthroat competition.

The revival of SAA could indeed mark a significant chapter in the South African aviation industry history. However, the road ahead is filled with obstacles. Only time will tell whether SAA’s phoenix-like rise will stand the test of the ongoing pandemic and stiff competition.
