The City Council in Cape Town is making moves to greenify the city further. It recently shared plans to extend the breadth of nine existing natural reservations while also declaring six new ones, according to Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, Eddie Andrews.

This significant expansion in ecological preservation in Cape Town is being pursued in accordance with the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act. Andrews also made a call to the public to participate in the process and provides remarks on the proposal.

"I would like to commend the Biodiversity Management officials for their sustainable solutions to any urban pressures that Cape Town faces; not only for their significant contributions towards the accolades that the city receives annually but also the progress they've accomplished with these conservation areas. These areas are now officially designated as new City nature reserves," stated Andrews.

The proposed additional nature reserves include Ariesfontein Nature Reserve, Haasendal Nature Reserve, Soetwater Nature Reserve, Symphony Way Nature Reserve, Van Schoorsdrift Nature Reserve, and Westlake Nature Reserve.

The expansion of these destinations as well as the introduction of new nature reserves sees Cape Town embracing eco-friendly strategies, ultimately fostering biodiversity. The formal declaration process that will incorporate public participation will kickstart very soon in partnership with CapeNature.
