Residents of Cape Town are grappling with the unrelenting upward march of the cost of living, feeling the pinch with each price increase on essential goods. From Muizenberg to Bellville, their financial anxieties echo the same narrative: survival is getting harder.

Prices for basic necessities like food and electricity have soared unreservedly, much to the chagrin of locals. One resident, Natasha Selbourne Gertse, described the increases as almost orchestrated, forcing people into untenable positions where they can barely afford life's essentials. "A bag of potatoes has doubled in price. What's next, losing our homes?" she asked, her sentiment reflecting the intense struggle most are going through.

Economic stagnation is having far-reaching effects across various demographics in the Cape. As a young person, Happiness Wilson from Claremont described the current economical landscape as harsh and unwelcoming compared to prior times. For small business owners like Anthea Abrahams, staying afloat means reluctantly increasing prices, which eats into margins and leaves her with minimal profit.

The health of the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions is also at risk due to financial constraints. Aleck Douglas Moyo, a residents of Muizenberg, spoke of elderly people forced to choose between vital medication and food due to the hefty price tags on both.

This pervasive economic strain also brings mental distress. The younger generation, often referred to as "the depressed generation," is feeling this squeeze, Sisanda Mkhandla from Bellville related. Their dreams of homeownership, entrepreneurship, and comfortable living seem to be slipping away due to the crippling cost of living.

Furthermore, Tina Thiart, a director and trustee of 1000Women, an anti-GBV group, highlighted the detrimental effects of financial struggles on GBV survivors, seeing escalating numbers seeking support. She expressed disappointment at the shortfall in governmental assistance in fighting GBV and bolstering women empowerment.
