Public Enterprises Minister, Pravin Gordhan, laid out the grim damages inflicted on South African Airways (SAA) due to State Capture, in a keynote address at the renewing of the airline's direct flight services from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Brazil. The revelations came amidst celebrations over SAA's resurgence, after nearly stumbling into oblivion due to the State Capture crisis.

In the face of adversities, the SAA has managed to brave the storm. The first direct flight from Cape Town International Airport is scheduled to launch on the upcoming Tuesday, followed by a flight from Johannesburg at the beginning of next month. These relaunches signal a revived South African Airways, gaining momentum after weathering the fallout of the State Capture.

However, the aftermath of State Capture still haunts the SAA. Gordhan pointed out that the airline has fallen behind in presenting its audited financial statements in Parliament for several years. Over the past decade, SAA has received heavy bailouts worth R40 billion, indicating the massive blow inflicted by the corruption scandal.

Despite the challenges posed by the State Capture, the minister remained optimistic about SAA's recovery. He passionately addressed the issue stating, "Most of these five years are about the State Capture years. This new team has found great difficulty in finding documents, being able to put together financial statements with enough evidence to satisfy

the Auditor-General."
