Plettenberg Bay, a well-loved seaside town on the Garden Route, has once again distinguished itself on the global tourism stage by earning eight highly coveted Blue Flag awards for the 2023/2024 season. The announcement came from the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA), who also bestowed upon the town the prestigious Green Coast Award for Nature's Valley.

Recognized globally, the Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label given to beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators that adhere to stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility standards. To maintain this status, these conditions must be consistently upheld across 4500 sites in 45 different countries.

In South Africa, Plettenberg Bay shares this prestigious accolade with 40 other sites in five destinations exhibiting a persistent dedication towards sustainable tourism practices. The town received full Blue Flag status for six of its popular beaches - Robberg 5, The Waves, Nature's Valley, Lookout, The Dunes and Singing Kettle - and reputable seal-swimming operator, Offshore Adventures, was awarded for its two boat operations.

For Plettenberg Bay, these accolades reaffirm its commitment to preserving its natural beauty while creating unparalleled experiences for travellers. It's not just about the Blue Flags or the Green Coast Award; it's about sustainable tourism, and the town is leading by example.
