Children across the globe are demonstrating that there is more to online gaming than meets the eye, using the popular gaming platform, Roblox, to protest the continuing conflict in Palestine.
Roblox is known for its user-created games produced via Roblox Studio. It supports a social media component, enabling interaction and live communication between its users, fostered to create a sense of community and buddy-building.
Instigating a novel form of protest, the platform was recently utilized to host an organised demonstration that drew 57,000 virtual attendees. This form of digital protest allowed teenagers, who due to their age and lack of transport could not physically attend a real-world gathering, to express their support virtually.
The wave of support for the Palestinian cause was considerably diverse, with players of both different ages and nationalities joining the protest. As they united on a large, red-bricked virtual road, gamers held up their respective country flags or the Palestinian flag in an emblematic sign of solidarity. Languages from around the world were spoken during the protest, further illustrating the global concern for the issue at hand.
These young activists' efforts were far from ignored, as their actions were celebrated on social media. The public commended Generation Alpha's use of digital technology, driving home the importance and relevance of social media during times of social unrest and conflict.
