Confirming a discussion with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, South Africa's foreign minister, Naledi Pandor, outlined that measures are being considered to provide crucial humanitarian aid to Gaza and other parts of the Palestinian territories according to a recent statement from the Ministry of International Relations.

Pandor categorically dismissed circulating media reports that suggested her backing of the Hamas-lead Operation "Al-Aqsa Flood", labeling such accusations as an attempt to discredit herself and the South African government.

In the Ministry's statement, it was clarified that during the conversation with Haniyeh, Minister Pandor expressed South African government's position, voicing heartache and regret over the loss of innocent lives in the conflict, extending solidarity to the people of Palestine, while also acknowledging Israeli casualties.

Additional comments from the presidential spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, highlighted that the South African government maintains bilateral relations with the Palestinian Authority, not with Hamas. Magwenya stressed that the support extended towards the Palestinians' struggle does not equate to endorsing Hamas.

South Africa's President, Cyril Ramaphosa, following a political meeting with the top echelon of the ruling ANC (African National Congress), appeared before the press adorned with a Palestinian flag and emphasised his commitment to standing in solidarity with the Palestinians. Extending his deep concern over the ongoing Middle East conflict, Ramaphosa also extended condolences to both Israeli and Palestinian people.

As the crisis escalates, pro-Palestinian demonstrations have been prevalent in many of South Africa’s major cities.
