PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) is set to pioneer AI-powered consultancy services following its newfound partnership with OpenAI. Aimed at enhancing productivity and curbing expenditure, the collaboration positions PwC as the first of the Big Four accounting firms to capitalize on OpenAI's advanced generative AI technology, which powers the ChatGPT chatbot.

The AI system, whose functionality extends to complex tax, legal, and HR consultations, is said to behave "like a 25-year tenure partner." The integration enables PwC to conduct comprehensive due diligence, identify compliance issues, and reliably assess business deals' viability.

This development comes amidst a significant slowdown in professional services, as major auditing firms grapple with massive job cuts and recurrent pay freezes. In contrast to this trend, PwC guarantees no near-term job losses, painting a convincing picture of AI as an indispensable tool in navigating intricate financial labyrinth rather than a trigger for job displacement.

OpenAI-supported Harvey, a professional services-focused startup, is also integrated into this partnership. The AI system is presently being trialed by around 650 UK staff, with expansion plans targeting 10,000 employees across over 50 countries.

This strategic trajectory reflects a growing trend amongst the Big Four audit firms - bolstering productivity via AI technology. Similarly, KPMG plans to invest multi-billion-dollars into Microsoft's generative AI and cloud services, Ernst & Young has launched an AI-powered initiative with IBM for efficient HR processes, and Deloitte partnered with Google Cloud to develop AI solutions for its clients.
