OpenAI, the tech powerhouse small-known for its AI chatbot ChatGPT and Image generator DALL-E, is currently developing a high-accuracy tool designed to detect images produced using artificial intelligence (AI). Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, revealed at the Wall Street Journal’s Tech Live conference recently that the upcoming tool offers a "99% reliability" score in verifying the AI origin of images.
Although an exact timeline for its public release is yet to be specified, the tool is currently under rigorous internal testing to ensure its precision and reliability. The cutting-edge detection tool joins a line of similar solutions that have been developed to distinguish AI-generated content. However, past attempts made by OpenAI to develop an AI-text verifying tool were shelved due to a lack of reliability. Noticeably, OpenAI remains optimistic, committing to continuously improving their software while extending their detection capabilities to cover AI-generated audios.
In a world where AI holds the capacity to manipulate information or fabricate news reports, the urgency for such robust detection tools has significantly escalated. The upcoming tool is expected to provide a foolproof method of authenticating digital images, a need that enterprises like Adobe Inc. had started addressing through their Firefly image generator.
While unveiling plans for the new detection tool, OpenAI executives also hinted at their next AI model that'll succeed GPT-4. Despite the current model's tendency to "hallucinate," the tech company expressed optimism in overcoming these downfalls and further refining their next AI model.
