A recent report from the office of the Auditor-General (AG) has cast a glaring spotlight on the deteriorating state of South Africa's public schooling system. Following random inspections at state-run schools, the AG's office revealed to Parliament on Tuesday an unsettling reality confronting learners, particularly in their early education years.

Thousands of Grade R teachers lack the necessary qualifications to effectively equip young learners, limiting their potential before they even begin their academic journeys. This unacceptable teacher incompetency runs parallel with South African students’ below-average performance in international assessments for reading and maths, revealing a pervasive educational crisis in our nation.

There is an additionally alarming misuse of school budgets, with funds intended for pupils’ nourishment being diverted to cover the costs of matric farewell events. This financial irregularity cuts into basic school operations, undermining students' well-being and educational environment.

Furthermore, the safety of students is under severe threat due to a combination of severely overloaded school buses, leading to risky transit conditions, and the precarious state of school infrastructure. Classrooms that should serve as safe spaces for learning are, lamentably, dilapidating into potentially dangerous environments for students.

The findings by the AG underscore the pressing need for immediate interventions, the ultimate aim being to protect the fundamental right of every child in South Africa to quality education.
