Amazon SA’s 2024 Launch: A Game Changer for the Local Retail and E-commerce Industry

South African businesses have been handed a significant chance for growth with Amazon’s announcement of the launch of its local store in 2024. Jeff Bezos' pet project will challenge the biggest players in South Africa’s e-commerce market, notably Naspers-owned Takealot, as well as traditional retail businesses as online shopping continues to grow in popularity among South Africans.

The decision comes later than anticipated, with Amazon initially planning to begin operations in SA in 2023. However, these plans have been delayed for unknown reasons.

Amazon’s involvement in South Africa is forecasted to significantly shift dynamics in the retail and e-commerce landscape on account of the firm's substantial financial resources. A predominant factor of Amazon’s sales, over 60%, is procured from independent sellers, inclusive of small and medium-sized businesses.

Robert Koen, Amazon’s GM for Sub-Saharan Africa stated the company's intentions on Tuesday: “Launching Amazon.co.za in SA will provide local sellers, brand owners and entrepreneurs, both small and large, with opportunities to expand their business via Amazon, offering great deals and a convenient shopping experience to customers all over SA.”

The incoming competition from Amazon has worried outgoing Naspers CEO, Bob van Dijk, who recently expressed concerns about the potential edge Amazon could gain over local e-commerce platforms due to new competition regulations in a budding retail sector.

The Competition Commission, having initiated an inquiry into the digital economy in May 2021, recently requested Takealot to bifurcate its marketplace and retail sections to stop the favouring of its own products, aiming to level the playing field for smaller and black business owners.

Critics, such as the Free Market Foundation’s Zakhele Mthembu, have expressed their concerns over the Commission’s demands. In response to the potential threat from Amazon, traditional retailers like Walmart’s subsidiary in SA, Massmart, have undertaken significant expansion and refinement of their online sales platforms.

The competition between Amazon and local firms transcends national boundaries, extending to the African continent - an area targeted for its booming population. It remains to be seen how this anticipated interaction among online giants will reshape the future of the retail and e-commerce sectors in South Africa.
