The Palestinian government announced in Pretoria on Friday that the two-state solution, proposed during the 1993 Oslo Accords, no longer serves as a feasible path to peace. Palestinian ambassador to South Africa, Hanan Jarrar, confirmed that the resolution aiming to establish Israel for Jews and Palestine for Palestinians has been virtually inactive for an extended period.
Simultaneously, Cape Town witnessed a surge of protestors aligned with the Al-Quds Foundation expressing solidarity with the people of Palestine. Responding to the recent violent conflict between Hamas' militant wing and the Israeli military, this is the second demonstration of such magnitude this week in Cape Town.
The ongoing conflict was further ignited with a surprise attack by Hamas on Israel this past Saturday, followed by retaliatory strikes on Gaza by Israeli forces. Since the eruption of this warfare, it is estimated that around 3,000 lives have been lost from both factions.
South African citizens, ranging from the elderly to young children, showcased their united front by waving Palestinian flags and marching to Parliament to lobby the South African government to show solidarity to Palestine. Their call to action was pronounced, given two South African fatalities reported amidst the Middle Eastern conflict.
One protestor voiced the urgency for South Africans, regardless of race or religion, to empathize with the sufferings faced by the people of Palestine, drawing parallels with the history of oppression experienced within their own nation.
