Israeli Military Proceeds With Next Operation Phase Against Hamas Amid Humanitarian Concerns

The Israeli military on Saturday reported a considerable shift of Palestinian civilians towards the south. This report seems to coincide with a prior notice ordering residents of Gaza City to evacuate following a full-scale retaliation against Hamas' onslaught last week as declared by Israel's Prime Minister.

Undeniably, the Palestinian population in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, now under a total siege and peppered with strategic air strikes, is caught in a harrowingly volatile situation. The Gaza authorities have reported close to 1,900 casualties thus far.

On Friday, Israel issued a notice to more than a million inhabitants of northern Gaza ordering them to evacuate to the south ahead of the impending operations. The specified deadline expired early on Saturday as affirmed by Israeli military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus during a briefing.

In his statement, Lt. Col. Conricus did not reference the expired deadline nor entertain queries about it. However, he confirmed that Israeli reserve soldiers across the Gaza Strip were “getting ready for the next stage of operations,” underlining that a key objective of this operation is the total dismantlement of Hamas and its military capabilities.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden indicated ongoing consultations with regional governments regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza. As the devastated region battles with food, water, and power shortages, addressing the humanitarian crisis becomes a top priority, Biden stated.

While the Israeli military continues operations against Palestinian rocket crew and strategic information gathering, international concern for internally displaced Palestinians rises, with estimates reaching over 400,000. In the face of these harsh realities, many steadfast Palestinians choose to stay put, claiming, “Death is better than leaving”.

Despite these turbulent scenarios, international organizations, including the United Nations, demand the lifting of the siege and a conducive environment for aid provision. Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres on Friday expressed the urgency of unhindered humanitarian access across Gaza, underscoring that “Even wars have rules.”

As the deadline issued to the Gazan civilians looms, uncertainty and fear dominate, prompting strong call-to-action from global leaders and humanitarian organizations.
