The increasing necessity for strengthening connectivity between African cities and boosting regional trade is under illuminated focus in this edition of the Business Day Spotlight. The potential of intra-Africa low-cost air travel permeates the discussion, with airlines in South Africa primed for playing a substantial role.

Bringing insights to our compilation is Paul Calvey, the partner and marketplace lead for South Africa at Oliver Wyman, an international management consulting agency. Oliver Wyman, renowned for specialising in strategy, operations, risk management and organisational transformation, operates with over 6,000 professionals spread across 30 countries.

Calvey sheds light on the significant alteration the South African aviation marketplace is undergoing in terms of intra-continental travel. Recently, low-budget service provider FlySafair announced impactful new routes from Johannesburg to Harare, Zanzibar, and Maputo, in a confident stride towards expanding the scope of their operations.

With data delivered by Oliver Wyman indicating Africa's airline seat per capita to be one of the world's lowest at 0.12, in contrast to Europe's 1.5 and the US's 3.5, Calvey underlines an enormous room for growth within the African continent.

According to him, South Africa's low-cost airlines, making up a majority of the continent’s budget carriers, are ideally positioned to capitalise on this opportunity. An anticipated surge in intra-continental routes managed by cost-effective carriers could exert a downward pressure on ticket prices, compelling national and group-based airlines to adapt and remain competitive.

The discourse zones in on data from South Africa's aviation industry gathered by Oliver Wyman, the unfolding narrative of low-cost travel in Africa, and the capacity for interconnecting more cities through budget airlines.
