The Premier Soccer League's newly announced Carling Knockout Cup will offer a R100,000 reward to each 'Player of the Match'. Released at a draw in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, the tournament reveals a remarkably innovative step that aims to foster a heightened level of competition among the players while offering immense entertainment for the fans.
The announcement of the monetary reward was conveyed by Fhatuwani Mpfuni, PSL's Media Manager, who further clarified that the disclosure of the amount the winning team will pocket would happen concurrently with the unveiling of the tournament's dates and venues. The venue for the final match remains under wraps until the semifinals.
“We hope that the players will show their mettle on the field” commented Nonhlanhla Nkosi, PSL’s Brand Marketing, Media and Sponsorship Head. Every single team within the PSL's premier division – all 16 of them – will take part in what promises to be an eventful and rewarding tournament.
The Cup is a substitute for the Telkom Knockout, which previously awarded R4.25 million to the winning team. The draw procedure for the new tournament utilised a seeding system. The top eight finishing teams from the previous season were seeded, while the unseeded portion included teams from the ninth to fourteenth position and the two newly promoted teams; Cape Town Spurs and Polokwane City. Featured matches will include Kaizer Chiefs hosting AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates playing at home against the strugglers, Cape Town City.
