An economic study conducted by Wesgro, the Western Cape trade, tourism, and investment promotion agency, revealed that the economic impact of cruise ships docking at the Cape Town port was remarkable. From November 2022 to May 2023, cruise ships significantly boosted the province's economy. The total injection was an impressive R1.2bn ($82.6m).

The study identified that the cruise ship sector of tourism has been a substantial contributor to the flourishing Western Cape economy. Cruise ship visits not only bring in happy holidaymakers looking to explore Cape Town's vibrant culture, heritage, and natural beauty, but these visits also bring a massive economic boost with substantial trickle-down effect on various sectors.

The benefits extend beyond direct spending as visiting cruise ships require services, goods and infrastructure, thus stimulating indirect employment and revenue in hospitality, transport, and supply sectors.

This study has reaffirmed the worth of investing in the cruise ship industry and promoting Cape Town as a prime cruise destination. The boost to the province's economy in such challenging global economic times is a tremendously encouraging sign for future growth and stability in the Western Cape.
