In a no-holds-barred critique, renowned economist Duma Gqubule castigated South Africa's National Development Plan (NDP) and the coordinating body, the National Planning Commission (NPC). His harsh analysis escalates an ongoing discussion challenging the effectiveness of the NDP amidst a lingering national economic crisis.

Gqubule refers to the NDP as a "joke," one that has unfortunately revealed itself over the course of a dismal 10-year review. The decried document, according to him, bears insipid recommendations that will do little to uplift South Africa's sinking economy.

Suggesting the NDP and the NPC to be out of touch with the economic realities of South Africa, Gqubule stated that the groups had failed to grapple with a pressing macroeconomic policy issue. He emphasized on the detrimental impact of the persistent austerity measures over the past decade, citing it as a primary reason behind the inability to achieve essential economic targets outlined in the NDP.

As the economic stress in South Africa continues to deepen, Gqubule's scathing critique underscores the urgency for a measured and effective approach to the country's dire economic situation.
