In a massive act of community-driven conservation in South Africa, Western Cape beaches recently became the backdrop for the rescue of thousands of endangered seahorses washed ashore due to the heavy rains.

The concerted efforts by conservationists, local community members, and holidaymakers put into the rescue operation have created a unique example of unity for a cause. The unusual phenomenon of large numbers of sea-dwelling creatures being washed up is a repercussion of the heavy rains, which have diluted their saltwater natural habitats, provoking their displacement.

The department of forestry, fisheries and the environment (DFFE) noted sightings of various seashells including abalone and alikreukel (periwinkles), scattered across Uilkraalsmond and Buffeljagsbaai. In Plettenberg Bay, throngs of locals and vacationers were engaged in the rescue operation at Lookout Beach, propelled by viral social media posts.

CapeNature spokesperson Petro Van Rhyn underscored that the persistent heavy flooding in the Keurbooms and Bitou rivers instigated the displacement of seahorses, resulting in their unprecedented deposition onto the shores of Lookout Beach. “More than 1,000 seahorses were rescued, and 720 were returned to their natural habitat," Van Rhyn informed TimesLIVE.

Found exclusively in three southern Cape estuaries - Knysna, Swartvlei and Keurbooms, the Knysna seahorses are the world's most threatened seahorse species.

For their significant response to the rescue operation, Van Rhyn expressed the department’s appreciation towards the community members, holidaymakers and volunteers from Save the Seahorse and CapeNature.
