As we approach the 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination period, Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, has revealed stringent policy plans aimed at preventing the much-decried leakage of NSC exam papers.

With over 700,000 candidates registered for the upcoming exams, it is imperative that the integrity of the examination process is preserved. "Unfortunately, the NSC is a national paper. Currently, with modern technology, a paper can be leaked in one province and quickly circulate to several others; this makes the source difficult to trace," Motshekga noted during a press conference in Pretoria on Sunday.

She further recounted the damaging effects that the leaks of NSC exams papers had in previous years, causing undue distress and undermining the quality of education for thousands of dedicated learners. Last year, more than 300 twelfth-grade students from schools in Mpumalanga allegedly received answer sheets during exams. Motshekga expressed the Department's commitment to thoroughly investigate any potential leaks in future and confront instances of fraud.

Looking towards the final exams, 723,000 candidates are expected to sit for the examinations across 6,800 centres, with NSC final exams slated to commence on October 30 and conclude on December 5.

Lastly, Motshekga called on parents, guardians, caregivers, and the community to rally behind the Grade 12 learners as they approach this critical period. She echoed the Department's commitment to preparing the system and learners for the examinations, in spite of challenges like potential load shedding.
