A student from the University of Rwanda, Theofrida Muginga, is revolutionizing farming in the region with 'Mkulima GPT', an AI-driven Swahili chatbot constructed to support smallholder farmers. The unique platform promises to revolutionize the sector by recognizing crop diseases and delivering pertinent, culturally-appropriate farming recommendations.

Hailing from a agricultural background, Theofrida understands first-hand the challenges faced by smallholder farmers, mainly those with scarce resources. The realization that these farmers were being excluded from technological advances prompted her to develop 'Mkulima GPT'. The platform aids by merging sophisticated technologies such as IoT and AI, promoting faster and more efficient farming practices.

Mkulima GPT separates itself from the competition with its dedication to local languages, including Swahili. The platform's ultimate aim is to extend services to encompass additional African languages. Making accessibility a priority, Mkulima GPT has initiated its foray into the digital realm with a dedicated website coupled with a WhatsApp number. Farmers can use these platforms to seek advice on a plethora of subjects, ranging from field preparation, pest management to post-harvest techniques.

The platform is scheduled to officially launch in December. Before final deployment, Mkulima GPT is welcoming feedback from users. Theofrida also plans to consult agriculture and AI professionals to refine the platform's abilities, promising an ingenious tool poised to support smallholder farmers in the region.
