Continuous Stage 3 Load Shedding Across South Africa Expected as Eskom Dealing with Breakdowns

Eskom, South Africa's principal power utility, announced that the country will continue to suffer stage 3 load shedding until Tuesday morning. They foresee a decrease to stage 2 from 5am Tuesday until 4pm, before resumption of stage 3, a pattern expected to continue until further notice. Eskom has pledged to keep the nation updated on any notable shifts in this situation.

At present, Eskom is dealing with breakdowns amounting to 15 984 Megawatts (MW) of generating capacity. However, there is a glimpse of relief on the horizon as the power behemoth expects six generation units to return to service come Tuesday.

Interestingly, Eskom announced the immediate suspension of load shedding for parts of the Western and Eastern Cape. This decision comes after heavy rainfall hit several coastal areas over the weekend, wreaking havoc on the electricity infrastructure. Eskom aims to ensure the safe restoration of electricity supply by its technical teams, navigating risky situations as they work across the country.

In the meantime, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) warns of likely worsening disruptions in the Eastern Cape, with expected increased flooding. The flooding will possibly lead to widespread infrastructure damage and soil erosion, with potential complications including prolonged breaks in essential services and substantial property damage. An originally issued level 9 warning for disruptive rain and gale force winds in the Western Cape has since been downgraded to level 6 for now.

Amidst these trying circumstances, citizens find themselves pressured to keep up with the unfolding situation and adapt accordingly, while waiting with apprehension to see what the next days may bring.
