Cape Town experienced an exceptional weather occurrence this past weekend when a powerful swell hit its tourist coast. This unusual event witnessed the combination of violent winds and strong tides resulting in water overtopping the dykes and flooding several streets and domiciles. The events have led to unfortunate casualties, including a 92-year-old woman whose death was confirmed by Craig Lambinon, the spokesman for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).
The unprecedented weather incident took its residents by surprise, including the patrons and staff members of Kalk Bay, a popular fishing village and tourist spot. The destructive waves surprised the customers of a local seaside restaurant as water crashed in through the windows. The local businesses were left shaken but determined to recover from the punch that nature had thrown their way.
Lehlohonolo Thobela, a forecaster at the South African Meteorological Institute, explained that the co-occurrence of a rising tide with an above-average coefficient can trigger large waves, leading to such instances.
This event was not localized; several towns near Cape Town also experienced water surges, which swept away bins and parked cars. The situation was fast diffused on social media platforms.
The National Meteorological Institute issued warnings and alerts for the country's impending conditions, affecting approximately 3,000 km of coastline through Monday. Local emergency services called for vigilance and some of the beaches were closed as a precautionary measure.
