Aston Bay, a popular location in South Africa, witnessed a horrifying spectacle as the body of a 68-year-old man was swept ashore on Sunday. South African Police Service (SAPS) Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, believes that the unfortunate incident was a result of the freak waves that hit the coastline on Saturday.
The victim's body was found at the Seekoei River Causeway, a stretch of road sandwiched between Paradise Valley and Aston Bay. The causeway had been declared off-limits to traffic on Saturday due to the presence of excessive water on its surface.
As of now, Colonel Naidu has withheld the name of the victim till his next of kin have been informed with sensitivity about the unfortunate incident. Tragically, this incident marks the second fatality resulting from the rogue waves. Earlier, a 73-year-old woman died after being swept away by a freak wave at Leentjiesklip in Wilderness.
Adding to the grimness of the situation, Colonel Naidu reported the discovery of a skull on Sunday morning washed ashore at Supertubes Beach in Jeffreys Bay. The horrific sight was witnessed by onlookers watching the swelling waves. An inquest docket has been opened in the wake of these incidents.
Even as the coastal community mourns the loss, officials warn that similar conditions are anticipated for the coming Sunday. The public has been swiftly advised to practice extreme caution and not to dive headlong into a potentially perilous situation.
