A new chapter marks the automotive industry of South Africa, as the multinational car manufacturer, Stellantis, announced a mammoth R3 billion investment towards building the Peugeot Landtrek bakkie locally. The French automaker is to build its new factory in partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition.
It's worth noting that Stellantis plans to manufacture these units not just for the local demand, but also for export, further galvanising South Africa's role in the global automotive marketplace. The Peugeot Landtrek, a much-anticipated bakkie, will have completely knocked down (CKD) units, increasing the competitiveness of the product in the international market.
The ambitious project will be realized in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Coega, near Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape. Launching operation in such strategic location envisages potential economic growth and job creation in the region.
Stellantis's commitment could return profitable gains as the bakkie market in South Africa and abroad remains robust. The manufacturing of the Peugeot Landtrek bakkie in South Africa is a testament to Stellantis's confidence in the country's industrial potential and its growing automotive sector.
