The peaceful community life in Hanover Park has been drastically thrown off balance as its residents grapple with the brutal murder of two young outstanding citizens, Umar Majiet, and Toufeeq Cummings. The cousins were gradually earning a noble place in society's fabric due to their significant roles in the local Muslim community until their lives were abruptly ended in a shocking incident.

On a fateful Wednesday afternoon, the victims were found lifeless in a car parked at the intersection of Green Turf and Lowdown Walk roads. The gruesome sight showed gunshot wounds to their heads, a chilling reminder of the extent of violence the city is learning to live with.

The specifics surrounding their tragic demise are still unclear as official police investigations continue. Philippi police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, confirmed the receipt of a distress call leading to the crime scene, stating that upon their arrival, the victims were declared dead by medical professionals on-site. The hunt is on for the unknown suspect/s who fled the scene, leaving the community stranded on a path of grief, questions and fear.

Further fueling the community's anguish are the late victims' backgrounds. Kashiefa Mohammed, the public relations officer of Philippi community policing forum, highlighted their embeddedness in the community. One of the victim's fathers serves as a respected Imam and the community looked up to Majiet and Cummings as promising young leaders.

Adding to the community grief, the Madina Institute extended condolences and emphasized an urgent need for communities to reclaim their streets from criminals. Making this a collective duty, they called for locals, the SAPS, families, and anti-crime forums to form a united front against crime.

Citizens have been urged to contribute to the ongoing investigations by anonymously providing useful information to Crime Stop or through the My SAPS mobile App.
