Cape Town Triumphs at Inaugural Angostura Bar & Beverage Awards

In a grand gala held at The Westin Hotel, Cape Town, the inaugural 2023 Angostura Bar and Beverage Awards recognized the remarkable talent and innovation South Africa's cocktail industry has to offer. Hacienda, a Cape Town-based establishment, won the honor of Best New Cocktail Bar, highlighting the city's growing prominence in the global gastronomy, leisure, and hospitality space.



Paul Reynell, the Angostura Bar & Beverage Awards Director, acknowledged South Africa's significant role in enhancing the global reputation of the industry. "Our cocktail bars and teams make a substantial contribution", he noted, emphasizing the crucial economic role of these industry stakeholders. Dalu Dube, head bartender at Hacienda, celebrated their big victory as a testament to the industry's camaraderie, describing the support as "incredible".


Simultaneously, The House of Machines’ Charne van Heerden and Sin Tax's Julian Short won the Best Bartender award. Speaking on their success, Short advised budding bartenders on mastering industry fundamentals and falling in love with their craft.



Industry pioneers who've made substantial local and international contributions over the years were also acknowledged at the ceremony. The Industry Icon Awards recognized Brent Perremore, Kurt Schlechter, Marson Strydom, and Raymond Endean for their commendable efforts, having shaped and nurtured the local cocktail landscape.


In conclusion, Reynell extended his heartfelt congratulations to the award recipients of 2023, acknowledging their exemplary innovation and dedication for keeping South Africa a top-performing player internationally.
